πŸ‘ Why I Made This - And What I'd Like You To Do Next

When my partner and I worked out that we were sitting at opposite ends of the imagination spectrum, we went looking for somewhere to actually read about it. The aphantasia side was reasonably covered - there's a proper network, accessible research, a community of people who've been comparing notes for a while. The hyperphantasia side was almost completely absent from anything free and useful, or worse, had been colonised by landing pages selling you a paid assessment report to tell you things you could have found in two minutes of reading.

And neither side had anything that treated the two experiences as connected - as different expressions of the same underlying thing, equally worth understanding.

So I made this. I am not a neuroscientist. I'm someone who found out how their brain works as an adult, found the existing resources either hard to navigate or behind a paywall, and thought: I can just… put it all in one place. Free. Readable. With a test that gives you the actual result rather than asking for your card details first.

What this is trying to be

Useful, mostly. And honest about what I don't know, which is quite a lot - I'm figuring this out alongside everyone else who stumbles onto this site after asking their partner to picture an apple and getting a very unexpected answer.

The moment of finding out where you sit on this spectrum has a specific quality to it - a kind of retrospective click, where a load of small unexplained things about yourself suddenly make sense all at once. I want this to be the place where that click happens for people.

The blog is my experience specifically - hyperphantasia, from the inside, with references to my partner's aphantasia for contrast because that's genuinely been the most useful frame for understanding both. I write it the way I'd explain it to a friend, which means it's occasionally slightly chaotic and I reserve the right to go on tangents.

What I'd like you to do

Take the test, if you haven't. It's free, it actually tells you something, and it takes five minutes. Then send it to someone - specifically the person in your life who'd be most surprised by their result. The apple question is one of the most interesting things you can casually drop into a conversation, and the range of answers people give is genuinely startling once you know what you're listening for.

Everything on this site is free. That's not going to change.

Where do you land?

If this resonated - or confused you - the free test will tell you exactly where you sit on the spectrum.
