The VVIQ has been used in hundreds of peer-reviewed studies since 1973.

How this test is structured

The first 16 questions are the VVIQ - a validated scientific scale used in hundreds of peer-reviewed studies. Yes, they feel repetitive. That's intentional: rating the same type of imagery across multiple scenarios gives a more reliable score than a single vivid question would. Bear with it.

Questions 17โ€“22 are different. They cover auditory imagery (can you hear music in your head?), other senses (smell, touch), emotional imagery, and involuntary imagery - whether your mind generates content without being asked. These produce a multi-sensory profile that no standard test measures. They're also more interesting.

Do you look for images in front of you, not inside your head?

If you naturally expect mental images to appear overlaid on the world in front of you - rather than in an internal "mind space" - you may be a projector. The VVIQ was designed for internal imagers, so your score here may underestimate your actual imagery ability. Read about prophantasia first โ†’
