The Imagination Spectrum.

Most people see something. Some see nothing at all.
Others can rotate it, smell it, taste it. You might have spent years assuming everyone's mind worked like yours. It doesn't. Welcome to The Phantasia Project.

~4%Aphantasia - a distinct cognitive style, not a deficit
~24%Below-average imagery vividness (low phantasia)
~26%Above-average imagery (vivid phantasia)
~3%Hyperphantasia - near-photorealistic imagery

Where do you land?

Aphantasia - No imagery Typical imagination Hyperphantasia - Vivid HD
Phantasia - Typical
You can form mental images with reasonable clarity. You might see an apple, but it won't be photorealistic - more like a sketch or a dim impression. This is the most common experience.
One more thing

The spectrum tells you
how vivid. Not where.

Everything above - the scale from aphantasia to hyperphantasia, the test, the live results - measures a single dimension of mental imagery. But in 2024, researchers discovered there's a second, completely independent dimension that science had been overlooking entirely.

Dimension 1 - Measured above
Vividness
How bright, clear, and detailed is your mental imagery? This is what the VVIQ measures.

Location
Does your imagery appear inside your mind - or overlaid on the world in front of you?
🧠 Internal External 🔭

Researchers at the University of Oxford and University of Liverpool confirmed in 2024 that some people project their mental images into their actual visual field - overlaid on the world in front of them, like augmented reality. They named this ability prophantasia. It's independent of vividness, unmeasured by any standard test, and it might explain why some people consistently score lower on the VVIQ than their imagery experience deserves.
