Most people assume everyone's inner world looks like theirs. They're wrong. Here's what the science - and a lot of surprised people - has revealed.

When someone with aphantasia closes their eyes and tries to picture an apple, they get knowledge - not pictures. They know it's red, they know it's round, but there is no visual impression. Their imagination works through concepts, language, and abstraction rather than imagery.
This is a natural cognitive variation, not a deficit. Research suggests aphantasics show lower rates of phobia and intrusive imagery, alongside strong verbal, analytical, and abstract reasoning abilities. The term was coined in 2015 by Professor Adam Zeman at the University of Exeter.
At the opposite end, hyperphantasics experience mental imagery so vivid it can be almost indistinguishable from reality. Memories replay like movies. Daydreams feel like immersive experiences. Books play out like cinema in the mind.
This comes with genuine downsides - intrusive imagery, emotionally intense memories, difficulty separating past from present.
The most universal entry point. Ask someone to close their eyes and picture an apple. A person with aphantasia will tell you they know it's red, they know it's round, they know everything about the apple - but they see nothing. There's no picture. Just... knowledge.

This delayed discovery is staggeringly common. Many people with aphantasia live decades before finding out that most people's inner world looks completely different - because there's no external signal anything is different. It simply never comes up.
Research by Zeman and colleagues, and separately by Milton et al. (2021), using fMRI shows aphantasics have reduced activation in visual cortex areas (especially V1) during imagery tasks, alongside weaker connectivity between the prefrontal cortex and the visual system. The brain receives the "imagine an apple" instruction - but the visual pipeline doesn't activate in the usual way. Intriguingly, aphantasics show entirely normal or even enhanced responses to actual visual perception. The gap is specifically in voluntary imagery generation.
Research by Wicken et al. (2021) and Zeman's group found aphantasics have significantly lower rates of phobia and PTSD-related symptoms. Most phobias are sustained by vivid involuntary mental imagery of feared outcomes - without that replay mechanism, the fear response doesn't sustain in the same way. Aphantasics also show strong performance on abstract reasoning, verbal tasks, and systems thinking, and may be more resistant to false memories, which are often generated through vivid visual imagination of events that didn't happen.
The mind-wandering of aphantasics tends to be verbal and conceptual rather than visual - quieter, and often easier to direct. Many aphantasics also fall asleep faster, with no involuntary image reel running as they try to wind down.
Blake Ross (co-creator of Firefox), Ed Catmull (Pixar co-founder), Craig Venter (genomics pioneer), and Glen Keane (Disney animator responsible for The Little Mermaid) have all publicly described having no mental imagery - making their visual and creative achievements all the more striking. Their success points to something important: conceptual and observational thinking can accomplish everything that visual imagination can, often with greater precision.

Hyperphantasia is less studied than aphantasia, partly because it's rarely perceived as a problem. If you have it, you've likely assumed this is just how imagination works for everyone. It isn't.

Hyperphantasics often describe reading fiction as watching a film. They mentally rehearse physical tasks with photorealistic precision and score significantly higher on spatial reasoning tasks. Memories replay visually, with something close to the original sensory texture of the moment.
The downside: the imagery doesn't ask permission. Intrusive thoughts arrive fully rendered. Disturbing content is filed visually and retrieved without warning. Falling asleep requires the cinema to slow down - and it doesn't always cooperate.
